What is NEET-MDS

The single dental PG entrance — used everywhere

Conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), NEET-MDS is the only entrance examination accepted for MDS admissions across All India Quota, State Quota, deemed universities and private dental colleges in India.

Conducting body: National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).
Eligibility: BDS from a Dental Council of India-recognised institution + completion of the 12-month rotatory internship by the NBEMS cut-off date.
Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT) — Pearson VUE delivery centres across India.
Structure: Single paper, 240 MCQs (160 main + 80 supplementary; all attempted), 3 hours.
Marking: +4 for correct, -1 for incorrect, 0 for unattempted. Maximum 960.
Qualifying: 50th percentile (UR), 40th (SC/ST/OBC), 45th (PwD). Score equivalent declared post-result.
Language: English only.

The most asked NEET-MDS questions

When does my BDS internship need to be completed by?+

You must have completed (or be on track to complete) your 12-month compulsory rotatory dental internship by the cut-off date specified in the NBEMS information bulletin — typically 31st March of the exam year. Candidates whose internship completes after the cut-off are ineligible for that cycle and must wait for the next year.

Which dental subjects does NEET-MDS test?+

All 9 clinical dental subjects you studied in BDS: Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Prosthodontics & Crown-Bridge, Periodontology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine & Radiology, Public Health Dentistry, Paedodontics & Preventive Dentistry, and Oral Pathology — plus the pre-clinical foundation (General Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Dental Materials, General Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology). What is the difference between percentile and cut-off score?+

NEET-MDS qualification is percentile-based: UR candidates need the 50th percentile, SC/ST/OBC need 40th, PwD need 45th. The cut-off SCORE that corresponds to that percentile changes every year based on how the cohort performed. NBEMS publishes the score equivalent after results — historically the UR cut-off has hovered between 240-280 out of 960.

AIQ vs State Quota — how does counselling work?+

50% of MDS seats in government dental colleges go to the All India Quota (AIQ) counselled centrally by MCC (mcc.nic.in). The other 50% plus all private/deemed seats go to State Quota counselled by individual state authorities. Your single NEET-MDS score is used for both — you register separately for AIQ and your home state. Most candidates participate in both.

How does the +4 / -1 marking change my strategy?+

Every correct answer earns +4, every wrong answer loses -1, blanks are 0. The break-even probability is 20% — if you can rule out even one option (raising the random pick to 33%) the expected value of attempting is positive. Our mock analytics flag MCQs where you guessed without elimination so you can train the discipline.

Is there a cap on the number of attempts?+

No. NBEMS imposes no statutory cap on NEET-MDS attempts. You can sit the exam every year as long as you continue to meet the eligibility criteria (valid BDS + completed internship). That said, every wasted cycle delays your MDS by a full year — so the goal is to clear early.

How do MDS specialties differ in competition?+

Orthodontics, Conservative & Endodontics, Prosthodontics, and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are the most fiercely contested branches and typically demand 99+ percentile for top government colleges. Public Health Dentistry, Oral Medicine, and Oral Pathology have shorter closing ranks. Your branch preference influences how aggressively you need to chase score, not just qualification.
