AI-102 Azure AI Engineer Associate: An Exam Breakdown
If you are staring down the AI-102 exam, your real question is probably simple: what is on it, how much time do I get, and how do I pass AI-102 without wasting weeks on the wrong topics? This breakdown answers that using Microsoft's own published study guide, so you can plan your preparation around what the exam actually measures.
What AI-102 is and how it runs
AI-102, formally Designing and Implementing a Microsoft Azure AI Solution, is Microsoft's associate-level exam for engineers who build AI solutions on Azure. It is delivered as a linear exam: you move through the questions in order. The pass standard is 700 on a scale of 0 to 1000. That is a scaled score, not a raw percentage, so do not assume 700 means "70% of questions correct" — Microsoft weights and scales items behind the scenes.
On timing, our mock is built to 50 questions in 100 minutes, which works out to roughly 120 seconds per question. That is a comfortable pace for straightforward recall items and a tight one for scenario questions that make you read a paragraph of context first. Practising against a clock is the single fastest way to stop those longer items from eating your buffer.
The six functional groups and their weights
Microsoft groups the AI-102 content into six functional areas, each carrying a published weight. The weights below come straight from the vendor's study guide — use them to decide where your study hours go. If a group is worth more, it deserves more of your time.
| Functional group | Weight |
|---|---|
| Plan and manage an Azure AI solution | 24% |
| Implement generative AI solutions | 18% |
| Implement an agentic solution | 8% |
| Implement computer vision solutions | 14% |
| Implement natural language processing solutions | 18% |
| Implement knowledge mining and information extraction solutions | 18% |
You can confirm these against the official Microsoft AI-102 study guide. Notice the shape of it: planning and managing the solution is the single heaviest group at 24%, and generative AI, natural language processing, and knowledge mining each pull equal weight at 18%. The agentic group is the lightest at 8% — worth knowing, but not where you sink your final study day.
How to read those weights
The temptation with any exam is to study what you already enjoy. The weights are your defence against that. Nearly a quarter of the exam sits in planning and managing an Azure AI solution — provisioning resources, securing them, monitoring and managing costs. Engineers who spend all day writing model code often under-prepare here and lose easy marks. Give it the airtime its 24% deserves.
The three groups at 18% each — generative AI, natural language processing, and knowledge mining and information extraction — together make up more than half the exam. If you are strong in one and weak in another, that imbalance is where a pass turns into a fail. A good AI-102 mock test exposes exactly which of those groups is dragging your score, so you fix the real gap rather than the one you assumed you had.
What our mock contains, and what it does not
Be clear-eyed about fidelity. The real AI-102 exam may include interactive components: tasks you carry out against the product rather than answer as multiple choice. This mock is multiple-choice and multiple-response only. It covers every functional group at its published weighting, but you will not practise the interactive interface here — do that in a real Azure environment. Microsoft publishes no official question count, so the 50-item length is ours; the 700/1000 pass standard is Microsoft's. Used for what it is — a fast, weighted, per-domain diagnostic — a focused practise exam for Azure AI is one of the most efficient tools you have.
A sensible preparation loop
Work in cycles. Take a full-length mock test under the 100-minute clock, read the explanation for every item you missed, and note which functional group it fell in. Study that group, then retake. When your scaled results clear 700 consistently across two attempts, you are ready to book.
